The art exhibition Shadowier Herbarium features Jessica Labatte’s artwork. Using the studio as site of focused attention, Labatte creates assemblages from fragments of consumer society, remnants of the artist studio, and flora of the domestic landscape. The artifacts of nurturing a child and the products of the seasonal labor of nurturing a garden are brought together as reflections on time and the hidden progressions of care-taking within her photographs. She allows dust and scratches on the film to stay present in the final images, in effect celebrating the environmental forces that would typically be removed from a photograph through retouching and allowing them to become an integral part of the artistic process.
Exhibition dates: Thursday, September 26 – Monday, November 4, 2019
