The art exhibition Migration/In Search of Arcadia features Ana Žanić’s abstract paintings and ceramic artworks that are reminiscent of imaginary landscapes. These works investigate questions of memories, origin, and past. By looking at these ideas through the lens of her journey of moving from one continent and country to another she also considers how such experiences affect an individual. We see her formal strategies of using layers of washes and with an emphasis on mark-making that’s closely related to calligraphy, language, and symbolic communication. At the core of Žanić’s art practice is the tension of the familiar vs. unfamiliar, or of being in control vs. the lack of control which is a metaphor for the duality of life where certain things can be controlled, yet others happen spontaneously.
